Bit of a yarn and a touching dedication behind beautiful egg installation

-

A two-metre high crochetedcovered egg has been installed near Hurst Pond in memory of Tom Pearce, who died from bowel cancer last year.

The giant, yarn bombing creation took months to build from wire and wood and is covered with spring-inspired crocheted ‘granny squares’.

Those impressed by the installation, courtesy of Hurst Hookers, are encouraged to donate to Bowel Cancer UK.

Ten crocheters from the popular village-based group made approximately 250, seven by seven-inch squares using a cheerful and quirky patchwork design and edged in yellow.

The bow-wrapped display sits opposite Hurst Pond and just underneath the village welcome sign.

Visitors to the area can also take in the crocheted chicken pond post toppers and the sight of the Easter Bunny himself atop the eggs-cellent creation.

After the Easter holidays the squares will be turned into lap blankets.

The group, who meet weekly at Hurst Cricket Club, decided to dedicate this latest display to

Tom, who also raised thousands of pounds for charity during his 10year battle with the disease.

His wife Catherine is part of the Hurst Hookers.

The Hurst Hookers have been yarn bombing in the heart of the village for over a year now, with each display getting more creative.

One of the organisers, Heather Howarth, said: “As we needed a suitable place to store and work on the egg Chris James, who lives in the village, kindly offered one of his small outbuildings.

“He made a suitable door and allowed us to use power for lighting.

“He has also provided transport and man power to move the egg frame to and from places and will be helping with its final resting place opposite the pond where it will sit proudly with a giant white rabbit made by Geraldine Eglington.

“There will be a QR Just Giving code connected to Bowel Cancer UK if people appreciate The Hurst Hookers’ work and feel they would like to give.”
