Unbeaten Unicorns crowned national champs
The Berkshire Unicorns inclusive rugby team have been crowned national champions of the International Gay Rugby (IGR) UK league after going undefeated all season long.
Having secured second place in the previous season the Braywick Park-based club entered the 2023/24 campaign with the intention of going one better and claiming the UK title.
Competing against teams from across the south of England they started the season strongly with victories over Kings Cross
Steelers (65-0 away), Brighton & Hove Sea Serpents (50-0 home) and Wessex Wyverns (17-0 away) before finishing the year with a convincing home win over the London Stags (55-7).
The Unicorns then carried that form into 2024 as they chalked up comfortable wins at
Brighton & Hove Sea Serpents (37-3) and the
Kings Cross Steelers, who they dominated 74-0 at Braywick Park. Their impressive home form continues with a 66-12 win over the Wessex Wyverns meaning the league title was up for grabs if they could get the better of title-rivals Colchester Kings RFC in the final match of the season.
After a gruelling 80 minutes which saw the lead exchanged several times, the Unicorns broke clear to win 26-17 and be crowned South East League champions.
This saw them progress to the national final where they took on the winner of the Northern IGR leagues.
On April 13, they faced off against the Sheffield Vulcans in an intense final. Neither side was able to make the breakthrough in the early stages, but some quickfire breaks from the backs saw the Unicorns pull clear in the second half for a resounding 4312 victory.
