East Lancs Road needs cameras to keep it safe

-

RE. the letter from Jack Haynes of Swinton complaining about multiple driving offences on the A580 East Lancs Road. I could not agree more! Massive investment has taken place, installing the apparently successful Guided Busway, BUT despite the massive investment, the route is not policed, consequently many car drivers are ignoring the rules to stay out of the bus lanes and many more speeding way beyond the limit imposed and jostling in and out of the bus lanes.

Why invest so much money in what appears to be, at last, a good project, but then allow its success to be diluted?

Just for the want of policing it and allowing it to work effectively?

Jack is correct. Cameras would correct it – and pay for themselves! It’s a ‘no-brainer’! Are you listening Manchester council, TFGM, GMP? M. Ratcliffe, Worsley

Box clever to fix potholes

ALL of Manchester’s roads could have the potholes repaired (and probably Tameside’s too) simply from the income raised by putting cameras at junction boxes throughout the city. The fines incurred would pay for the roads to be resurfaced, let alone repaired. One in particular that would be a good source of funds would be the junction box at Regent Road/ Ordsall Lane. I can spend 30 minutes trying to get out of Ordsall Lane simply because nobody seems to know what the rules are as regards yellow boxes. Other cities have cameras at yellow boxes and fine motorists for even having one wheel in the box so why can’t Manchester?

So to all of you out there – painted yellow lines in a crisscross design are NOT part of the local government Christmas decorations. They mean KEEP OUT OF THE BOX. Denise Hurst, Manchester

Road to nowhere...

WHEN will people like Coun Rosa Battle and other councillors enter

into the ‘real world’ (We will get roads right, Viewpoints, February 15)?

She states: “We have brought forward proposals to invest £160m in maintaining the roads over the next 10 years.”

Proposals mean nothing unless they are approved and the amount actually approved could be a lot less. Even so, £160m equates to £16m per year, but will that much be spent each year ?

Coun Battle goes on to say that by the end of this project we expect almost all the city roads will be restored to good condition. Almost all the roads? What about the rest of them, when will they be repaired? Plus, after this 10-year period of work, the roads that were repaired first will no doubt need repairing again. Dream on councillor. Poverty claim is rubbish

IN a recent issue of the M.E.N. there was a picture posted so-called showing poverty in the Langworthy area of Salford.

As a resident of Hersey Street which is shown in the picture, I would like to say it in no way shows poverty. Yes, I agree people live on the breadline but my street does not show poverty.

What it does show is scumbag residents like to dump their rubbish and Salford council do not do enough to stop them.

Yes, they have recently placed signs up asking people not to dump rubbish but this is currently is not working. It needs Salford council to fine residents and private landlords who allow these people to move into this area.

Currently, Great Places do not vet their residents. I recently had a drug dealer move into a Great Places house, although they have since moved. I have also had the community payback people clean the alleys at the back of both sides of Hersey Street. The same people cleaned Fram Street weeks earlier but to no avail, so i suggest you contact Salford council and Great Places to answer why they have let the area looks like this. William Burroughs, Langworthy

Ban phones from table

I RECENTLY read an article of a mum stressing that there was no conversation any more at meal times because their children were preoccupied on their phones throughout the meal.

I see no reason to have them as part of the table furniture whether eating at home or in a restaurant.

There is a very simple solution and one which I employ when my grandchildren come to the table – I take the phones off them until mealtime is finished. I absolutely accept that these devices are nowadays a necessary part of daily life both socially and educationally. I don’t accept that they have to be permanently in hand. Len Goldberg, Prestwich
