Steve barred from his own pub in new Street showdown

-

STEVE McDonald and his mum Liz find themselves locked out of the Rovers Return after last night’s dramatic showdown in Coronation Street which saw Michelle discover that her cheating husband fathered a baby with Leanne Battersby.

In jaw-dropping scenes to be screened on the ITV soap on Monday, a raging Michelle takes drastic action to force her hapless hubby and Rovers landlord Steve to give her a divorce and take half of his assets. The barmaid, who lost her son Ruairi at 23 weeks of pregnancy in harrowing scenes last month, enlists the help of Johnny and Kate Connor to barricade herself in the pub.

In last night’s action-packed double bill Steve blurted out that he is the father of Leanne’s baby Oliver. And a devastated Michelle, played by Kym Marsh, punched new mum Leanne and left her with a bloodied nose at a party thrown by the Platts to welcome the baby they believed was fathered by Bistro boss Nick Tilsley.

Kym said: “For Steve to blurt it out in such a public way was brilliant and so much more dramatic than if he had sat Michelle down in private and told her.

“And for it to come at a time when Michelle was finally starting to see that there might be a way forward for them both following Ruairi’s death, made it all the more poignant.”

Kym, who took on the emotional storyline after suffering the loss of her son Archie at 21 weeks of pregnancy, worked with a fight arranger on the scene when Michelle gave Leanne a right hook and she got it in one take.

After the explosive row in the Bistro, Steve is seen on Monday calling the police in an attempt to get back in his own pub and admits that it’s going to get “very messy” for his character. Asked if Steve is going to regret telling the truth, actor Simon Gregson said: “I think his only regret will be the way it happened and the people that have been hurt because of his actions. “Deep down he feels he has done the right thing by his son. “He couldn’t live with the guilt any more and he just wanted to be honest and not have any more lies.” Fans will be left wondering if Michelle might now turn to her close friend Robert Preston, played by Tristan Gemmill, for comfort. Simon said: “He would be devastated.”
