Wembley victory can be just the start of a new era of Reds glory

-

BRACE yourself, it’s going to be a rollercoaster end to the season for Jose Mourinho’s revitalised Reds.

We’re in with a brilliant chance of picking up silverware on three fronts – starting tomorrow in the EFL Cup final against Southampton at Wembley.

Mourinho has taken a ‘Let’s win the lot’ approach, and I love it. Betfred is 20/1 for United to win the EFL, FA Cup and Europa League – and we’re offering 2/1 that they win at least two of the trophies up for grabs.

Don’t give up hope on the Premier League either, because Jose has got these boys up and running big time - and it wouldn’t surprise me if we didn’t pinch a top four slot with Arsenal AND Liverpool both fading during the run-in.

Mourinho’s leader on the pitch, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has been simply magnificent, almost in the class of one of my great heroes – Eric Cantona. He’s scored 24 goals already this season and he’s 11/4 at Betfred to score first at Wembley tomorrow.

It’s a toss-up who’s first on the team sheet between the Swedish superstar, our world-class keeper, David de Gea and fast-improving Paul Pogba.

Ibrahimovic has led this new-look team with a determined swagger. He’s a big personality and his sheer presence intimidates defenders. He, along with De Gea and Pogba plus Eric Bailly, represent a magnificent spine.

I do fear this may be De Gea’s last season with United if Real Madrid come knocking yet again in the summer. But the more trophies in the cabinet come May – with the distinct prospect of this team going on to bigger and better things – can only help keep the Spaniard between the sticks at Old Trafford.

What I do love most of all about Mourinho and the way he has set about the job he’s always craved is the fact he consistently picks teams capable of winning.

We had a slightly weaker line-up against Blackburn in the FA Cup last Sunday and the game could have gone either way, so Pogba and Ibrahimovic are ordered off the bench and guest what… they combine as only they can and we’re through to the quarter-finals.

Last time we were up against Southampton in a Wembley final was 1976. We lost 1-0 in that FA Cup showdown and I was among the super-confident United fans left with egg on my face that day.

With Alex Stepney in goal, Lou Macari and Gordon Hill up front and Tommy Docherty as manager, we went into that game as outright favourites, but were maybe a little too cocky.

That won’t happen tomorrow, but I’m predicting it will be close but think the Reds will land the first cup of the season – an achievement that will act as a catalyst. Here’s one for you: Zlatan to score in a 1-0 win during 90 minutes which is 20/1 at Betfred.
