Lewandowski agent says he won’t be joining Reds
ROBERT Lewandowski’s agent has dismissed the possibility of a transfer to United.
The Bayern Munich striker was linked with a move to the Reds yesterday amid transfer complications over a deal for their No. 1 summer target Antoine Griezmann.
Lewandowski, 28, was scouted by United in 2012 but his agent has quashed speculation he could move to Manchester in the summer.
“Does any top player in the world want to be a plan B?” Maik Barthel said.
Lewandowski only signed a new Bayern contract in December and is tied to the club until 2021.
The Poland international joined the Bundesliga champions from Borussia Dortmund in 2014 on a free transfer and has been prolific in front of goal for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this term.
Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed in his autobiography he mulled over signing Lewandowski ahead of his final season at United.
“Mick Phelan and I had been to Germany to see the German Cup final, to watch Shinji Kagawa, Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels,” Ferguson wrote in his second autobiography.
Ferguson decided to sign Robin van Persie from Arsenal instead and the Dutchman scored 30 goals in 2012-13 as United won their 20th title.
The Reds are monitoring Torino striker Andrea Belotti after cooling their interest in Atletico Madrid’s Griezmann and could still sign two strikers in the summer.
Italy international Belotti has scored 27 goals in 30 appearances for club and country this season and hit a hat-trick in Torino’s weekend win over Palermo.
