Being patient pays off for ex-teacher

- By DIANNE BOURNE

AN OLD doctors’ surgery in Urmston has been given a new lease of life – as a stylish new restaurant.

Former teacher Andy Kershaw has fulfilled a lifelong ambition by opening his own restaurant with his wife Kate.

And they decided to keep the links to the building’s old use by calling it The Surgery restaurant.

The old Primrose GPs’ surgery at the site on Primrose Avenue closed down in 2015 to move to a new location on Crofts Bank in Urmston.

Andy has given up his career as a catering lecturer to start the business with his art teacher wife, who designed all of the interiors herself.

The result is a sleek and stylish look with dark blue booths, wooden floors and table tops, and crystal decanter lighting features.

Andy says he aims to bring ‘city style to the suburbs’ with the new venue.

In the kitchen there is a custom-built wood-fired oven, where Andy and his team will create a range of authentic pizzas, while a house speciality will be steaks served on a 350 degree volcanic Blackrock stone.

There is also a full range of burgers and sliders as well as a full children’s menu.

Andy said: “I have worked as a teacher of catering and hospitality for over ten years in and around Manchester. After leaving school I trained as a chef and further developed my career in a food technology BSc (hons) degree. Opening a restaurant has been a lifelong ambition.”

The couple chose Urmston for the restaurant given the area’s current developments and community spirit. He said: “Urmston is an up and coming area with a sense of strong community. The centre has a bustling atmosphere and the location we have chosen for the restaurant is central to all of that. I believe that Urmston is a fantastic place to introduce a new restaurant bar concept. With the addition of the artisan market, independent businesses, a strong network link Urmston is a prime location that is ready and in need of more good places to eat, drink and socialise.” He adds: “My aim for the restaurant is to create a place that people feel relaxed and comfortable while enjoying fresh food and drink. We aim to bring the city vibe and style Andy Kershaw of Manchester to the suburbs in a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere.”

The venue launched on Saturday night with a special party for friends and family, including Emmerdale star Anthony Quinlan and Hollyoaks favourite Jamie Lomas, and opens to the public from today.
