Charity walk for stricken City fan
A TRIO of fundraisers have taken on an epic trek from Manchester to York to raise cash for a brave youngster who is battling cancer.
In November last year, Daniel Lord, 11, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour which turned out to be a very aggressive form of cancer.
After a seven-hour operation to remove the tumour, he was put on a seven-month course of chemotherapy, which is due to end in June.
Daniel has had to cope with spinal injections twice a week, having his bone marrow removed, a Hickman line in his chest and a nasal gastric tube, as well as various infections and complications.
Daniel, who is originally from Oldham and moved with his family to Northumberland in 2015, is a massive City fan, and an appeal for funds to send him on the trip of a lifetime to Disneyland Paris once the course of chemotherapy is over was spotted by fellow fan Peter Haworth.
He and his friend Frank Jefferson, along with Frank’s son Joe, 20, decided they wanted to do something to help, and settled on undertaking the 62.5mile walk to York from the Etihad Stadium.
Frank, 53, who lives in Bredbury, Stockport, said: “We City fans like to think of ourselves as a big family, and it was just something we heard about.
“No one knows what the outcome is going to be for Daniel, and we wanted to help put a smile on his face.”
Daniel’s mum Joanne said: “Once this cancer nightmare is over and we become just another ordinary family, our intention is to give any funds to another charity to help families struggling with cancer.”
