Swinton looking for new fans

- By TOM BRAMWELL

SWINTON Lions will take on Super League opposition in Huddersfield Giants in the fifth round of the Challenge Cup – and the club are hoping to secure some additional support ahead of the game.

On Sunday, John Duffy’s side welcome Sheffield Eagles to Heywood Road - and season ticket holders at Super League clubs can gain entry for just £10.

With no local Super League teams in action on that day – and as the weekend is a designated international break in football’s Premier League meaning neither City nor United have a match - the Lions are hoping to welcome plenty of neutrals taking up the offer.

“We trialled the idea a bit with Wigan Warriors,” said Swinton’s general manager Rob Parker. “It was a success and the appetite for rugby league is massive with Super League fans.

“A lot of the Super League teams are playing on the Friday, so coming to watch Swinton Lions on Sunday is a great fix for those wanting to watch rugby league.

“Heywood Road is a familyfriendly venue. There will be lots going on on Sunday and the match should be great with Sheffield Eagles always being tough opponents.”

The two clubs will be meeting for the first of three fixtures this season, with the Lions also set to face Mark Aston’s side in the Summer Bash at Blackpool in May.

Currently, the two clubs are separated by points difference alone, both having picked up just one win.
