Zagar returning to Belle Vue for season’s opener

- SPEEDWAY By HAYLEY BROMLEY

MATEJ Žagar will return to Belle Vue for a one-off appearance in the 2017 Peter Craven Memorial meeting at the National Speedway Stadium.

The former Aces No. 1 and current world No. 9 will be joined on April 1 by Justin Sedgmen, Kenneth Bjerre, Rohan Tungate and ex-team-mates Max Fricke and Joe Jacobs.

Somerset’s Charles Wright, Poole’s Brady Kurtz, Redcar duo Ben Barker and Jason Garrity, Edinburgh’s Ricky Wells and former Aces rider Patrick Hougaard are also in the field.

Žagar had been a permanent fixture in the Aces side since 2013 and proved a central figure in their Grand Final appearances in the last two seasons. Director of speedway Mark Lemon is thrilled to see one of the stars of his ‘Class of 2016’ return to Manchester.

He said: “It didn’t take much persuading Matej to join this year’s Peter Craven field and I think that’s down to his commitment to the club.

“He loves the new stadium, and I suppose in a way it’s him paying his respects to the fans for all their support over the years too.

“He’ll be one of the top contenders on the night. He’s world class, there’s no doubt it. On his day there’s no better spectacle than watching Matej Žagar, especially at the National Speedway Stadium. He’s unbelievable.”
