/Top ten global landmarks are revealed

MACHU Picchu is the best landmark in the world, according to travellers.

The Inca citadel came out on top of a list of 25 of the world’s best landmarks compiled by TripAdviso­r, based on site users’ reviews.

The UK snuck on to the list, with Big Ben listed as the 19th most popular landmark, beating the Sydney Opera House, which was rated 24th.

The Great Wall of China came 16th, while the Eiffel Tower was considered to be the 14th best, according to reviewers.

In second place, meanwhile, was the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

One reviewer wrote: “Grand is an understate­ment.

“The architectu­re, the white marble and the beautifull­y maintained green gardens are stunning.”

Angkor Wat, in Siem Reap, Cambodia, meanwhile, came third on the list.

The complex of temples was described as being: “Simultaneo­usly eerie and majestic and in miraculous condition. A truly memorable experience, like absolutely nothing else.”

The highest rated landmark in Europe to make the list, meanwhile, was St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City, in fourth place.

One reviewer explained: “When you walk into the dome and the light shines through the windows and catches all of the gold, the building begins to glow.”

The Taj Mahal was fifth on the list.

A typical review reads: “Simply the greatest architectu­ral achievemen­t on earth, not to mention a testament to love.

“You haven’t lived until you’ve visited.”

In sixth place was Spain’s Mezquita Cathedral de Cordoba, while the Church of the Savior on Blood in St. Petersburg was the seventh most popular.

Eighth on the list was The Alhambra in Spain, which was described by one reviewer as being ‘a monument unique in all the world, with beautiful elements of Moorish culture and design’.

The first and only USA landmark to make the top 25 was the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, which came in ninth place.

Italy’s Duomo di Milano, meanwhile, came in tenth, with reviewers particular­ly impressed by its stained glass windows.
