HASEEB Hameed suffered an injury scare on the first morning of Lancashire’s opening first-class match of the season.

The opener was sent to hospital for a scan after being struck on the hand and retiring hurt after facing just 23 balls against Cambridge University at Fenners.

Lancashire are yet to reveal the extent of the damage, but Hameed returned to the ground later in the day and will be assessed again this morning.

Hameed, 20, had his first tour of England cut short over the winter after suffering a badly broken finger which required surgery. He has also had an operation to try to solve a long-term sinus problem in recent months.

“Haseeb Hameed has returned to Fenner’s following a precautionary scan of his hand this morning. He will be reassessed overnight,” said a tweet from Lancashire.

Despite the loss of Hameed, the Red Rose made 338-6 declared on day one of the three-day match, with four batsmen scoring halfcenturies.

England ace Jimmy Anderson then claimed two wickets as the students reached close on 15-2.

Opening the batting with Hameed, Alex Davies – who himself has had to battle through injuries over the last 12 months - made 80, while new signing Dane Vilas made 58 batting at No. 5.

Skipper Steven Croft added 78 and Jordan Clark 64.

A Lancashire 2nd XI had a difficult day at Taunton, however, closing their first day of three on 62-9 against a Somerset first team.

The day started well for Lancashire as Simon Kerrigan, who had seen Stephen Parry picked ahead of him for the first team at Fenners, sent a message to head coach Glen Chapple with 4-34, while youngster Danny Lamb claimed 4-17 as Somerset were dismissed for 220.

But the Red Rose were soon in trouble at 18-5 as Karl Brown, Rob Jones, Luke Procter, Calum Turner and Brooke Guest all fell cheaply. Only Josh Bohannon (12) and Arron Lilley (16) reached double figures for Lancashire.

The Red Rose begin their Specsavers County Championship Division One campaign against Essex at Chelmsford on Friday, when Shivnarine Chanderpaul is expected to be available.
