As big brothers go, Adam CorryWilson has proved he’s the best.

The six-year-old has won an award for being the best sibling to little brother Hugo who was born at just under 25 weeks.

It was Adam’s mum, Rachel Corry, who nominated him for the award – not only because of his love and affection towards Hugo, but because of the strength and support he offered when she miscarried with twins at 23 weeks when Adam was almost three.

Rachel, from sale, said it was Adam who helped her and his dad, stephen Wilson, 41, to carry on after their devastating loss.

she said: “Adam was the only thing that kept us going during this time. He helped us process our new life without his brothers by asking all the questions a child that age would.”

Two years later, when Adam was almost five years old and about to start school, Hugo was born at 24 weeks and six days and needed to stay in hospital for seven months and have two operations.

When Hugo eventually left hospital, Adam was soon teaching him about the world.

On the journey home, all Rachel could hear from the back seat was ‘look Hugo, that’s a tree. Look Hugo, that’s a tram. Look Hugo, that’s a tower block – there aren’t many of those around any more.’

Rachel, 42, an occupational psychologist, says Hugo ‘adores Adam’ and when they go to collect him from springfield Primary school in sale, he is frequently greeted with a beaming smile and ‘hiya Adda’ - the first two words Hugo has learned.

Rachel said: “Adam has been the best big brother we could have hoped for. Throughout Hugo’s time in hospital Adam never complained about feeling left out.

“At Christmas, he literally ran into Hugo’s hospital room to play santa and help him open his presents. Adam’s love for Hugo is infectious – he’s often telling people all about his little brother.

“He has made the past 15 difficult months so much easier than it could have been – Adam is our star just as much as Hugo is.”

The Tommy’s Center Parcs super sibling Award celebrates a big brother or sister who has proven wise beyond their years after the early arrival of their new baby brother or sister. Now in their 22nd year, the Tommy’s Awards recognise heroes of families who have been touched by pregnancy complications or the loss of a baby.
