Mourinho’s warning to Martial

REDS BOSS TELLS STRIKER ‘GIVE ME THINGS I LIKE’

- By STUART MATHIESON

JOSE Mourinho says Anthony Martial must follow the example of Marcus Rashford to win the United boss over.

The French striker was left out of the squad against Chelsea and has only started once in the last eight matches.

Meanwhile, Mancunian Rashford goes into tonight’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Anderlecht at Old Trafford on the back of two goals in his last two league matches.

Martial had a sensational debut campaign at Old Trafford last season following his £35m move from Monaco, a figure which could rise to £56m.

He has scored 24 goals for the Reds since that switch from Ligue 1 and another goal would trigger a further 10m euro payment.

Asked if he was not fully satisfied with Martial’s progress under him, Mourinho said: “We are together for almost 10 months. I know the players much better now. The players should know me much better now.

“In the same way I know what the players like, they also know what I like and I have to go in the direction of the players and they have to come in my direction.

“That’s the point. That’s why Marcus Rashford even without scoring goals, and not in the Premier League since September, was always a player that I trust and I play and support because he was always coming in my direction and what I want from a Manchester United player. It’s about that. it’s about knowing each other better.

“Do I think Anthony is player with great ability? Yes. Do I think he can play successfully for me? Yes. But he needs to give me things I like.”
