A MUM-to-be had bleach hurled into her eyes from a passing car as she walked along a pavement – and a man was also hit by the corrosive fluid.

They suffered ‘severe discomfort’ in the drive-by attack but escaped serious injury, say police.

It’s understood they were advised to go to hospital but returned home to use eye baths.

Officers said they ‘could easily’ have suffered life-changing injuries as they issued an urgent appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

The victims, believed to be a couple, were walking near the Aldi supermarket on Ashton Old Road in Openshaw at around 8.10pm on Friday.

Police said a car drove past and bleach was thrown from a window.

A GMP spokesman said: “The bleach hit them in the eyes and caused severe discomfort. However, luckily, it is not believed there will be any lasting damage.”

The car was seen to drive off towards Audenshaw, Tameside. But around 20 minutes later, police received another report that a passenger in a silver Ford Fiesta had thrown bleach at a man also walking along Ashton Old Road.

He had earlier witnessed eggs being thrown at passersby from the same car. Police said the bleach hit the man’s back and he wasn’t hurt.

Insp Cherie Dunn said the victims were lucky.

She said: “We could easily have been dealing with life-changing injuries.

“Not only that, the woman is pregnant – the worst-case scenario does not bare thinking about. We are keen to speak to anyone who knows anything about these incidents as soon as possible.”
