/Have a marathon holiday

IF yesterday’s London Marathon left you feeling inspired, then why not plan a trip to some of the world’s other marathons?

A new list of the world’s most popular marathons has been created, taking into account factors such as how likely it is to rain on the day and the cost of getting a hotel and flights to the destination.

The list, created by comparison site TotallyMoney. com, also features a variety of facts about each marathon, such as how easy it is to get a place and if you need a ballot for entry.

It also converts the cost of entering each marathon into sterling.

The list puts Australia’s Gold Coast Marathon as the most expensive overseas marathon to get to, with average travel costs coming in at more than £1,110. The event itself however, is only around £95.60 to enter. The New York Marathon is one of the most expensive to enter, at £288.37.

The Mumbai marathon meanwhile, is one of the least expensive to enter, at just £40.27, although it would cost around £625 for flights to get there and £209 to stay in a hotel.

It is however, the run which has the smallest chance of rain on event day, at just 6%. The December event is also the joint hottest on the list, with average temperatures on race day likely to hit 24 degrees the same as January’s Honolulu Marathon.

Runners are much more likely to encounter downpours taking part in the Naha Marathon in Japan, which at 61% has the highest chance of rainfall of any marathon on the list.

The world’s biggest marathon meanwhile, based on the number of people taking part, is the New York Marathon, which had a massive 51,388 runners taking part in 2016.

The rest of the top five features the Ottawa Race Weekend, the Athens Classic Marathon, Paris Marathon and the Chicago Marathon.

Joe Gardiner, TotallyMoney. com’s head of brand and communications, said: “A marathon can be a challenge to yourself, or a great way to raise money for charity.”
