Quigg sets sights on showdown with Selby

- BOXING EXCLUSIVE By SHELDAN KEAY @MENSports

SCOTT Quigg admits he would relish the chance to have an all-British-showdown with world champion Lee Selby later this year.

The Bury boxer will look to get another win under his belt when he faces Viorel Simion at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

The bout, which is now an official eliminator for the IBF featherweight title, is on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s world heavyweight title showdown with Wladimir Klitschko.

Welshman Selby is the IBF featherweight champion, and Quigg would have no problems taking him on.

“I’d be happy to face any of the world champions, but a win over Simion puts me straight in line for a shot at Selby, so that fight will be there ready to be made,” Quigg told M.E.N. Sport

“There are a lot of options. I wouldn’t mind fighting Selby anywhere but I think it would 100 per cent make the most sense in Manchester.

“It’s a nice bonus having the fight as an IBF eliminator but it wouldn’t matter even if the fight had nothing on the line, I would still have the same drive to win.

“I could also fight the winner of Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares, and there is Gary Russell Jnr too, so the division is packed with quality.

“I’ve got this fight on Saturday first though and I need to make sure that I get the win and that I look good doing it.”

Quigg’s fight on Saturday will be his first since he relocated to Los Angeles to be trained by Freddie Roach at his Wildcard Gym. Roach has recently revealed how impressed he has been with Quigg, stating that he is the most dedicated fighter he has ever seen. Quigg was extremely thankful for the praise from his trainer, and Scott Quigg hopes to show this weekend just how much he has improved since heading to the USA.

“I’m very grateful for Freddie’s time, he believes in me as a fighter and we get on really well,” he said.

“For him to make compliments about how I’m the most committed and determined fighter means a lot, as you’ve got to remember who he has trained in his career.

“I’ve always said I’m the most determined person you’ll ever see as I cut no corners, but him saying that really gives me a lot of confidence.

“It’s been a great camp and I’m excited to perform on a massive platform at Wembley Stadium this weekend. It’s the perfect chance to showcase my skills and show the improvements I’ve made training under Freddie.

“Boxing in front of up to 90,000 fans is what you come in to boxing for, so I’m happy to be involved with this event.”
