Jones signs new Reds deal

SALFORD have rewarded another of their top performers with a new contract.

Josh Jones has played in the forwards and at centre this season, impressing wherever selected.

“This is a great club and I really enjoy myself here, which is so important,” said Jones after signing a two-year deal. “The club are clearly on the rise, why wouldn’t you want to be a part of it?”

Jones is the 10th first-teamer to commit his future to the club in the last few weeks, with the process sparked by head coach Ian Watson signing a long-term deal.

“Josh is another great signing for the club that adds to our stability of creating our team going forward,” said Watson.

Jones, Lee Mossop and Jake Bibby – three of the four Red Devils who have signed new contracts this week – are in the 19-man squad to face Widnes Vikings tomorrow. Josh Wood is the only one of the quartet to miss out.

Niall Evalds has been brought in and is likely to start on the wing as the club has stood down Justin Carney ahead of his disciplinary hearing for alleged racial abuse in last week’s Challenge Cup victory over Toronto Wolfpack.

Kris Brining, Todd Carney and Logan Tomkins return to the fold, but Junior Sa’u remains unavailable through injury.

Opponents Widnes are currently bottom of the table, but shocked St Helens last time out and will have enjoyed a nine-day turnaround.

SWINTON boss John Duffy has called for his side to use last week’s stunning Challenge Cup victory over Super League Huddersfield to kick-start their season.

With just two wins from their opening 11 matches in the Championship, the Lions face another tough test away to London Broncos tomorrow.

“The players have been up there all week since the Huddersfield win and it was a fantastic result for the club and the players,” said Duffy.

ROCHDALE visit league leaders Hull KR while Oldham take on struggling Dewsbury with a squad boosted by the fact Jack Spencer and George Tyson have passed fitness tests.
