Hac Classical to open Glasto

-

MANCHESTER’S rave-meetsrecital project Haçienda Classical will open the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury this summer.

Dreamed up by Haçienda manager Paul Fletcher and former Haçienda DJs Mike Pickering and Graeme Park, together with experimental orchestra Manchester Camerata, the project launched last year at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, reimagining the tunes that defined a generation at the original club as classical compositions.

It has since gone on to tour the country, playing to sold-out crowds at venues including London’s Royal Albert Hall, before returning with a new set this year.

Now, it’s been confirmed it will open the Pyramid Stage on the Friday morning of the festival, which takes over Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset, from June 21 to 25.

Former Joy Division and New Order star Peter Hook, the project’s executive producer, said: “After 40 years in the music business I still count my three appearances at Glastonbury as the peaks of my career.

“To be back with Haçienda Classical in 2017 is another landmark moment and is dedicated to Tony Wilson and Rob Gretton to celebrate their contribution to British music and culture.”

Graeme Park added: “I’m utterly thrilled to be opening the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury this year. It’s a real honour to appear on the stage where I’ve seen so many of my favourite artists and legends play.

“Bringing Haçienda Classical to Glasto is a mouth-watering prospect and one that is sure to excite the Glastonbury crowd.”

This summer’s touring schedule will also see Haçienda Classical visit London’s Royal Albert Hall, Harbourside Ampitheatre in Bristol, Manchester’s Castlefield Arena, Kew The Music, Lytham Festival, Newcastle’s Live From Times Square, Liverpool’s Hope & Glory Festival and Brighton Racecourse.

Bob Riley, CEO of Manchester Camerata, said: “Haçienda Classical has bound together amazing artists and audiences in a unique Mancunian musical story.

“The opportunity to play Glastonbury and open the Pyramid Stage, is a massive honour and privilege for Manchester Camerata.”
