‘Directions’ con warning

-

A DISABLED pensioner has warned others to be wary after he was conned out of a bracelet when asked for directions.

The 70-year-old was riding his mobility scooter along St Matthew’s Road, Edgeley, Stockport, when he was approached by a woman.

She asked for directions to the hospital and after the pensioner had given them she and another woman put bangles on his wrist to say thank you. A while later the man, who had been on his way home after meeting friends, noticed that his gold bracelet had been taken.

The bracelet had cost £300 around 15 years ago and the victim, who asked not to be named, was intending to pass it on to his grandson.

He said: “It is rather embarrassing but it was so quick and professionally done.

“I felt like a mug when I put two and two together, I can’t believe they have done it. I can’t walk and was sat on my scooter so was a target. I want to warn others.”

The pensioner, who has chronic osteoarthritis, has reported the theft to police, who are investigating.

The two women were Asian, with long dark hair and wearing colourful saris.

A man, who was also Asian, waited in a blue or grey car before driving them off.

The bracelet is solid gold and is described as ‘a loose, chunky chain. It was stolen at around 4.30pm on Saturday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
