Shop bosses face £1,700 bill over mouse droppings
INSPECTORS ALSO FOUND BANANA SKINS AND USED TISSUES AMONG RUBBISH PILE
THE owners of a corner shop face a £1,700 bill after mouse droppings, used tissues and discarded banana skins were found during an inspection.
Council officers made the grim discovery at the Beer and Wine Shop, on Greenwood Street in Oldham.
During their visit in July, last year, health inspectors discovered mouse faeces throughout the premises, including on the floors and shelving in the shop area.
There were also droppings amongst the waste and step ladders used in the shop.
A huge pile of rubbish was also discovered in the cellar and shop area, with rotten bananas and used tissues amongst the filth.
Large amounts of plastic and cardboard were found in these areas, which was used for storing surplus stock.
Hygiene inspectors said the condition of the cellar would encourage pests.
The food premises was also not being kept clean or maintained in good repair and condition.
Owners of the shop, Philip and Joan Davies, appeared at Tameside Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 4, to admit three food and hygiene offences.
Mr Davies was fined £320, with a £32 victim surcharge and was ordered to pay £1,400 in costs.
Ms Davies was given a 12 month conditional discharge, as well as a £20 victim surcharge.

“We will not hesitate to take action in cases like these to protect the health and safety of our residents.
“Business owners who run establishments that serve food must comply with the law or be prepared to face prosecution.”
