Charity pledges massive sum to ease crisis in Yemen
A HUMANITARIAN aid organisation based in Cheadle has pledged an amazing $1million in aid to Yemen.
Mohammed Alousi, director of programmes at Human Appeal, made the pledge at an aid summit in Geneva which brought together governments and aid organisations in an attempt to alleviate the situation in Yemen – which the UN has described as ‘the world’s largest humanitarian crisis’.
The organisation has also announced that it will be providing emergency assistance to hospitalised children and their families at Al Jumhori Public Hospital in Sana’a, the largest city in Yemen.
Human Appeal will also supply medicines, equipment and nutritional supplies to the hospital, and plans to conduct renovation and maintenance works on the building.
Earlier this year Human Appeal released an opinion poll showing that over half the UK public – 51 per cent – said they did not know that there was an ongoing internal conflict in Yemen.
According to Human Appeal over the past two years 44,000 people have been killed or injured, and three million displaced by the conflict. An estimated 1,000 children are dying every week from preventable diseases like diarrhoea, malnutrition and respiratory tract infections.
