We haven’t made much progress on our roads

THANK you for the photo of Cheetham Hill Road (Nostalgia, Then & Now, May 3).

It is very nostalgic, but I can’t help wanting to point out how ironic the comparison between the road now and in 1905 is.

As you point out, back then there were cobbles, and now ‘it’s heavyduty Tarmac to deal with the hugely increased traffic.’

Did anyone notice the state of that road today in the photo? Typical of today’s poor, dangerous standard of roads that will never be put right. As time goes and it is left, will it make it easier or cheaper to repair in the future? No way!

We haven’t progressed much have we in over 100 years? As is the case with lots of other things – like, for example, man’s inhumanity to man.

Getting worse by the day. D Somers, Whitefield

EU will pay Brexit price

WOULD somebody please explain to me why leaving the EU is making the Remoaners so fearful? Let’s look at the facts.

Last year our total vehicle sales to the EU were worth £14.6billion. Our total vehicle imports were worth £44.7billion to the EU. Our deficit with Germany alone was £27billion of which a very large part was for motor vehicles.

So if the EU were to impose sanctions on British goods and we follow with sanctions of our own, the German car industry would be up in arms with their government, because what the Germans want the Germans get.

As for the rest of our trade with the EU, our exports total £229billion, while our imports from the EU total £290billion – deficit £61billion.

The EU is getting a good deal out of us. Time to put an end to it. No exit fee – just leave. Arthur Bowers, Blackley

A day for our nurses

ACROSS the North West, nursing staff are preparing to celebrate a day very close to our hearts.

Nurses’ Day is marked around the world each year on May 12 – the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

It is a time when we come together to celebrate the work that nurses and healthcare assistants do every day of the year, a hardworking army of thousands going above and beyond for their patients.

Some nurses will use the day to have a tea party, run a conference or exhibition, or simply take a short time-out from their busy schedule for lunch – something a lot of people take for granted, but which for nursing staff can be a luxury.

This year, the Royal College of Nursing is celebrating nursing staff for the superheroes they are. Your readers can help by telling their stories of how nurses and healthcare assistants have been their heroes. If they are on Facebook or Twitter, they need to use the hashtag #nurseheroes and tag us @RCNNorthWest.

Our members greatly appreciate the support they receive from the public, which keeps them going during their busy shifts and the tough times. Our nursing staff will do their best to continue to be your heroes. Paul Wood, operational manager, Royal College of Nursing North West

Obesity is a health crisis

IT was disheartening to read about the huge increase in people being admitted to hospital with obesityrelated problems in Greater

Manchester (‘Obesity related hospital admissions in Stockport rise by three quarters in the space of a year, M.E.N., May 2)

Obesity is the biggest public health crisis facing the UK.

More people are developing obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer – and there is a significant financial burden on the NHS. It is crucial that health organisations work together with the community to tackle this issue.

As Dr Ranjit Gill from the CCG said, there is positive work already going on across the region, and a lot of free support is on offer to people to help them lose weight and become more active and healthy.

At ABL Health, we work in partnership with CCGs and councils to deliver nutrition and exercise sessions that make a positive difference to people’s lives – and it doesn’t cost a penny.

Anyone struggling to lose weight who feels that the time is right for them to make a change can find out more about our services by talking to their GP or contacting us directly www.ablhealth.co.uk Dr Sheena Bedi, Chief Executive , ABL Health, Farnworth, Bolton
