THIS weekend will see Alexandra Park in Manchester host a culinary carnival that will celebrate all members of the surrounding community.

The Moss Side Food Festival, taking place on Saturday May 13, is the result of the hard work of local youngsters who are providing food for thought by challenging perceptions of teenagers – and of the neighbourhood they grew up in.

The idea for the festival was first cooked up by members of Moss Side Girls, aged between just 13 and 14 years old. The group is run by the charity RECLAIM – a youth leadership and social change organisation that helps young people develop their skills and potential.

Running from 12-4pm the festival aims to bring people together to indulge in mouth-watering food and spend time in wonderful surround- ings in the heart of one of Manchester most vibrant communities.

The festival will feature a smorgasbord of tasty-treats reflecting the diverse make-up of the neighbourhood. With Caribbean, Asian, English, Mediterranean and Egyptian food all on the menu there’s certain to be something to delight any gourmet.

A selection of family friendly activities will also brighten the day with a programme of sports and games, performances from local DJs and musicians and free face painting all taking place throughout the festival.

Cara, 14, who has helped organise the festival and is a member of RECLAIM’S Moss Side Girls, said: “As a group, Moss Side Girls want to present a truer image of Moss Side. We want the first thing you think of when you hear Moss Side is a positive one about a community that leads the way.

“The food festival will show the talent within Moss Side and to encourage others to see Moss Side as it really is.”

Coun Nigel Murphy, Manchester council’s neighbourhoods boss said: “Saturday’s festival is set to be spectacular and is a testament to the hard work of local young people. It just goes to show that with a little support and encouragement our younger residents can achieve anything they set their minds to.”

The Moss Side Food Festival takes place at Alexandra Park, Princess Road, on Saturday 13 May from 12-4pm, entry is free. For information about the festival or RECLAIM please visit: www.reclaim.org.uk
