IT may look like a large gold spaceship has landed at Salford Quays – but this enormous shiny structure is actually the latest venture by creative cocktail makers The Alchemist.

The futuristic building has been created by Bolton-based boutique construction specialist Artez Group, which celebrated a completion of construction works with a ‘golden top out’ event.

Guests were invited to a sneak preview of the £1.7m scheme, which sits on a bridge that links MediaCityUK to The Lowry, before it is handed over to Living Ventures to be transformed into the trendy bar and restaurant.

It will join The Alchemist’s two popular existing outlets, in Spinningfields and on New York Street in Manchester city centre, which specialise in unusual and theatrical cocktails.

Mike Banton, managing director at Artez, said: “The design and concept for the building by Reid Architects was stunning, and I think it’s safe to say the execution does it justice. It’s like a palatial golden spaceship has landed at Salford Quays.”

The building features gold-clad roof and walls, and a terrace that juts out over the canal, creating an al fresco drinks and dining space.

Simon Potts, managing director at The Alchemist, said: “When the plans were first created for this site it was immediately apparent the building would make a bold statement, and this is most certainly the case.

“We’re delighted to now begin transforming the interior into a welcoming and vibrant space for all who visit MediaCityUK.”

Stephen Wild, managing director at MediaCityUK, added: “This is an iconic, statement building which makes the most of its stunning location, overlooking the MediaCityUK waterfront.

“As the landscape here continues to evolve, The Alchemist will bring a stylish food and drink offer to the mix, adding to the vibrant destination we are creating.”

And Salford mayor Paul Dennett hailed the contribution The Alchemist will make to Salford’s growing food and drink scene.

“The Alchemist’s decision to make Salford their latest home naturally makes a contribution to Salford Quays and our local labour market, creating even more jobs for local people,” he said.

The Alchemist is due to open in August.
