Man in court over ex-Navy officer’s death

A SECOND man has appeared in court charged in connection with the death of former Royal Navy officer Mike Samwell.

Raymond Davies, 21, appeared before Manchester’s magistrate­s yesterday accused of manslaught­er, burglary and aggravated vehicle taking.

His case was adjourned until next week, when he will appear before a judge at Manchester Crown Court.

Mr Samwell was hit by his own car, an Audi S3, as he tried to stop thieves from stealing it outside his home in Cranbourne Road, Chorlton, at about 3am on Sunday, April 23. He later died in hospital. During the hearing Mr Davies spoke only to confirm his name and address.

The charges against him were read out, but no pleas were entered. There was no applicatio­n for bail and he was remanded into custody until the next hearing on Tuesday, May 25, at Manchester Crown Court.

Mr Davies, of Castleford Walk, Chorlton, is the second person charged over Mr Samwell’s death.

Ryan Gibbons, of Arrowfield Road, Chorlton, was charged with Mr Samwell’s murder in April.

He was also charged with burglary and aggravated TWOC (taking without the owner’s consent).

A 15-year-old boy from south Manchester, who was arrested on suspicion of murder and burglary, has been bailed pending further enquiries.

A 20-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of murder and burglary, has also been bailed pending further enquiries.
