Join in to boost city celebration
MANCHESTER Day celebrates much of what makes the city a great place to live, work and play in.
This year’s theme takes its inspiration from the world of magic - Abracadabra!
Organising this fantastic event certainly requires many magicians, such as the volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes in advance. Manchester Council would like to celebrate all the group leaders and all the creative volunteers who give up their time to coordinate their groups, organise transport, or come down to the WoW workshop in the weeks before the Parade.
They work together to turn the ambitions of over 80 community groups into costumes, dance moves, and props that help illustrate the theme. The council would like to acknowledge all of them and mention a few here – Sandra, from Newton Heath; Jo and Kelly, from Jelly Dance; Sue, from Simply Cycling; Hannah and Claire, from the Prairie Dogs; Gulcin, who has activated the Turkish community; Anita and her mum, who amaze everyone with their handmade costumes; Anish, from the Malayalan Association; Manuela and her Italian compatriots; Tom (Pez), from Salford; Debbie, of Alexandra Park; and Alison, who makes more costumes and props than most of the professional artists.
Liz Pugh, co-founder of Walk The Plank and Manchester Day executive producer, said: “You, and many, many others like you - too many to credit everyone here - conjure up miracles every year. Thank-you - you make us proud.”
Manchester Day returns on Sunday, June 18, for a magical celebration of the city that invites hundreds of people from across the region to come together and create a day to remember.
As always, the parade will also spill over into the city centre squares for a full afternoon of entertainment, food and drink – all of which will be revealed in the coming weeks.
There is still time to be part of the show, either by helping to create the miraculous parade or by volunteering to help on the day. Cllr Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said: “We want everyone to show the pride in our city and come along for an afternoon of celebration – or better yet, get involved and be part of the event.”
