Ricky adds unbeaten duo to growing stable

HATTON TO TRAIN HEFFRON AND WILLIAMS

- By SHELDAN KEAY @MENSports

RICKY Hatton is excited about the future of his stable after announcing he will now train unbeaten supermiddleweight duo Mark Heffron and Darryll Williams.

Hatton has gone from strength to strength in his career as a trainer ever since hanging up his gloves, and he earned his first world champion earlier this year when Zhanat Zhakiyanov won the WBA bantamweight title.

Hatton now hopes more major honour will soon be on the horizon after Heffron and Williams joined his ranks.

“I’m over the moon that two of the best super-middleweights have chosen to join my gym and I think it says a lot about the work myself, Mike Jackson and Blain Younis have been doing with our lads over the past couple of years,” Hatton said.

“Darryl Williams is a really exciting boxer and his first fight with Jahmaine Smyle is probably the British fight of the year so far.

“Everyone knows how much I liked a tear up during my career, but I’ll be aiming to add a few more subtleties to his game.

“As for Mark, what more do you need to say about him than ‘pure power.’ He’s had a bit of a stop-start career, but he’s really on it now and anyone who can put away 13 of 15 opponents has to set pulses racing.

“I also train Jake Haigh and Chris Blaney so the gym is brimming with talent at middleweight and super-middleweight and I think the sparring sessions alone are going to be something else.”

Both Heffron and Williams are unbeaten in their respective careers, with the duo having an identical record of 15-0.

Heffron returns to the ring on June 16 at Victoria Warehouse, while Williams is the current English super-middleweight champion after beating Smyle back in April, with the pair set to have a rematch in July.

With Hatton now in his corner, Williams is confident he has the right man to help guide his career.

“Ricky can take me all the way. I don’t think there is anyone else in this country that will be able to do what he can with me because of my style,” he said.

“I never took up boxing until I was 18 and Ricky’s fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr was the first boxing match I ever watched from start to finish.

“It was watching Ricky in that fight that made me want to become a professional boxer one day. I didn’t know much about him, but it was his fighting style that I loved. I was gutted when he lost that fight. “Ricky will bring out all the aggression I have and make sure I use it in the best possible way.”
