Grub’s up as street traders cook up storm

-

FOOD fair GRUB kicked off its residency at Mayfield Depot at the weekend, assembling some of Manchester’s best street traders at the derelict railway station.

Run by husband and wife team Jason and Jules Bailey, the event has won a loyal following from its previous pop-ups at city centre breweries Runaway and Alphabet.

So loyal in fact, that the first eager visitors were queuing in the rain ready for the gates to open just after 12pm on Friday, with a slight delay as the finishing touches were applied.

Occupying the Baring Street side of the site, opposite Piccadilly Station, the set-up consists of a series of converted shipping containers housing six street food vendors, who will change from week to week.

The opening weekend’s spoils included gourmet macaroni cheese from Mac Daddies, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean mezze from The Ottomen and bao from Wallace and Sons.

They were joined by Deep South-style comfort food from Oh My Glaze, Greek dishes from Street Souvlaki and ice cream sarnies from Scoop Up, following on from burgers from What’s Your Beef, Polish sausages and pierogi from Smak!, and sweet treats from the Manchester Doughnut Company.

GRUB at Mayfield Depot will be open from noon to 10pm every Friday and Saturday and from noon to 8pm on Sundays.

The event marks the beginning of the redevelopment of Mayfield Depot, which is at the heart of a £850m regeneration plan.
