Murder inquiry after assault victim dies

- By SAM YARWOOD and ALEXANDRA RUCKI

A MURDER inquiry is under way after a man died four days after being snatched from the street and beaten up.

The 43-year-old victim is understood to have been walking along Masefield Drive, in Farnworth, Bolton, in broad daylight when he was dragged into a car at around midday on June 9.

He was driven to Century Mill – several minutes away – and viciously assaulted by a group of men before being taken back to Masefield Drive.

GMP say the incident was reported to them just before 6pm that day and the man was treated in hospital for his injuries. He left the following day, but was readmitted two days later and died on Tuesday. Police are appealing for information and say a 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remained in custody for questioning. According to witnesses, the churchyard at nearby St James’ Church was sealed off by police as part of the investigation, along with properties on Ramsay Avenue and George Street, which are a short walk from the scene.

Neighbours on Masefield Drive said they were shocked by what had happened. They said everyone on the street was friendly with each other, and children often played together outside, close to where the victim was snatched.

The man’s identity has not been disclosed, but he is understood to be local to the area and his next of kin have been informed.

Det Insp Cheryl Hughes, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “Someone must have seen something. If you did witness the incident or you think you might know those responsible, then I urge you to get in touch.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting reference number 515 of 13/06/17.
