SHAUN Ryder was twisting commuters’ melons yesterday by voicing the Metrolink public announcements.

The Happy Mondays star provided announcements across the tram network for the entire day as part of celebrations for BBC Music Day.

In one announcement he told commuters, to the tune of Dare by Gorillaz, “It’s coming up, it’s coming up, it’s... Anchorage!”

For passengers travelling to Pomona, Shaun said: “Next stop is Pomona. Pomona, never heard of it, you talk so hip you’re twisting my melon man.”

Other musicians such as Ozzy Osbourne, Alfie Boe and Miles Kane, joined in with the fun voicing for announcements in regions across the UK.

Ozzy’s laid back tones were heard on Midland Metro Trams in his home town of Birmingham, while Alfie delighted passengers travelling on the Blackpool Tramway.

Shaun, speaking to BBC 6 Music presenter Chris Hawkins, said: “I got asked for BBC Music Day would I come and do some tram announcements and I thought why not, as it’s a good idea. I enjoyed doing it but I will never listen to it myself as I hate listening to my own voice.” Rebecca Sandiford, producer for BBC Music Day, said: “BBC Music Day aims to unite generations and communities through their love of music, so we thought we’d give commuters a reason to smile as they make their daily journeys.” BBC Music Day, which took place across the UK yesterday, celebrates the power of music and how it can create unforgettable memories. As part of the celebrations, a blue plaque was installed outside the flat where Factory Records was formed on Palatine Road, Didsbury. A number of key figures from the label’s past were present to see the plaque unveiled at its original headquarters. In the run-up to the BBC Music Day celebrations, local radio stations asked listeners for nominations for an iconic location or music legend that they feel should receive the honour. Radio Manchester said the birthplace of Factory was an extremely popular choice. Shaun Ryder
