Mum’s pride as son saves woman’s life
AMATEUR BOXER LIAM, 14, DIVED INTO SEA TO SAVE SWIMMER FROM DROWNING
A MUM has spoken of her immense pride after her hero son saved a drowning woman during a trip to the seaside.
Amateur boxer Liam Pastore, 14, came to the rescue when he heard a desperate young girl shout for help when her mum got into difficulties off the coast of Formby Beach at the weekend.
The Stockport teenager swam over and pulled the woman’s head out of the water so she could breathe, before battling the strong current to drag her to the shore.
The modest Reddish Vale High School pupil said instinct kicked in when he realised the woman needed help, insisting he ‘did what anybody else would do.’
He said: “I heard the daughter screaming, and grabbed hold of her mum, then swam her back as fast as I could. It was pretty far out, the tide was coming in, and the current was pretty strong. I thought, ‘I have to get her back to the shore.’
“It was all kind of a blur. I was a little bit shaken after. I only did what anybody else would do.”
Liam said the woman was in a bad way when she reached land – she was unconscious and frothing at the mouth.
Thankfully, she regained consciousness when she was resuscitated, and was taken to Aintree University Hospital by air ambulance for further treatment.
Liam’s mum Aiysha, 38, from Reddish said: “I was already proud of him, but I’m immensely proud of him now. He rang me and said ‘I’ve just saved somebody’s life.’ He said ‘It’s something anybody else would have done’ – but not everybody would have been able to do it.
“He is an amateur boxer and trains at Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy in Wythenshawe, which means he’s very strong.
“If he hadn’t done what he did, she might not have survived. He does work extremely hard, but this has gone beyond expectation. He wouldn’t think twice about helping anybody else.”
An North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We got a call at 5.12pm to Formby Beach to reports a woman had been pulled out of the water.
“An ambulance and air ambulance were called to the scene. A woman was taken to Aintree University Hospital via air ambulance.”
Shaun Egan, from Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy, said: “Liam is a hard-working, dedicated lad.
“When any member of the gym does something good – in or out of the ring – we’re always proud of them.”
