POLICE are searching for a man after a Manchester student suffered a horrifying acid attack.

Manchester University business student Resham Khan, 21, and her cousin, Jameel Muhktar, 37, were left with ‘life-changing’ injuries after they were attacked in London.

The pair had been celebrating Resham’s birthday on a visit to the capital when they were sprayed with sulphuric acid as their car waited in traffic.

Despite being severely injured, they managed to drive away from the scene, although the car veered off the road and crashed.

The suspect followed them on foot before fleeing the scene.

Members of the public helped the cousins and took them to hospital before the ambulance service arrived.

Resham, a business management student, who was due to start a new job working with young people, revealed on social media that she has been left with horrendous burns over her face and body.

She described experiencing excruciating pain and watching as her clothes burned away.

She explained that Jameel’s burns were so bad that he had to be put into an induced coma for some time.

Now Metropolitan Police have released a photo of John Tomlin, 24, who they wish to trace in connection with the attack, which happened at around 9.15am on Wednesday, June 21, on Tollgate Road in Canning Town, London.

He is described as being white, around 6ft, of stocky build with short fair hair – he is known to frequent the Canning Town area. The force is advising members of the public not to approach Tomlin, but if they see him to call 999. Det Supt Neil Matthews said: “I would like to reassure the public that our continued focus remains on finding the person responsible for this horrendous act of violence.” Police do not believe the attack was racially or religiously motivated. An address in east London was raided in the hours after the attack. There have been no arrests. A fundraising appeal to support the pair has been set up by one of Resham’s fellow students, and has so far raised more than £28,000. The page can be found at gofundme com/21stbirthdayacid attack
