A HOST of City’s young players were back at the training ground this week to start their pre-season preparations.

While the first team have not yet returned to the CFA, the club’s teenagers have started work for the new season in an important summer for the academy.

Jason Wilcox has stepped in as interim academy director following Mark Allen’s departure and an Under-18s coach is needed to oversee the promising prospects coming through.

The role is expected to be filled before the beginning of the season and the appointment could be internal.

A number of players have already left for season-long loans but opportunities are there to be taken this summer for those in Manchester.

Pep Guardiola has pledged to take at least a handful of youngsters on the senior tour to the United States later this month in addition to the group that Under-23s coach Simon Davies leads. Not all of City’s starlets are back in Manchester, with a number starring in international tournaments.

Javairo Dilrosun bagged three assists for the Netherlands in their Under-19 European Championship win over Germany, while Rodney Kongolo also featured in the game.

Lukas Nmecha and Isaac BuckleyRicketts are also at the tournament representing England. Both came off the bench in their opening 2-0 win over Bulgaria on Monday. They face the Netherlands tomorrow.
