Rail chaos is a sign of things to come

AS someone now in her eighth decade, I often think rather than marvelling at the so-called ‘progress’ I have seen, I think ‘despair’ is more the word.

I’ve now read of train ticket-machines crashing across the country, leaving passengers in long queues and facing penalty fares which is a frightening example of what is to come as more jobs are taken by machines and robots.

There was a times when train tickets were sold by humans. Mo of Middleton

Thank you to store staff

I WOULD like to say a very big thank-you to the B&M store in Ashton-under-Lyne.

I had a freak accident (on Tuesday, June 27) which left me bleeding very badly.

The young man, who I think was a first-aider was so very good to both myself and my husband (we are in our seventies).

Nothing was too much trouble for him. He sat me down, attended to my leg and dress it with good thick dressing.

He mopped up blood from the floor (and there were loads of it), ordered someone to get me a new pair of socks as mine were soaked in blood and gave my husband a bottle of water.

He really was a most helpful young man – and also the security guard. They both did so much for me.

I cannot thank them enough. But due to the shock, I never got their names so I would like to let them know how grateful we are. Hazel Douglas, Dukinfield

Now you know how we feel...

IF Gavin Lewis (Viewpoints, July 1) is annoyed at Jeremy Corbyn being called an extremist how does he think the majority of this country feel? When we give an opinion about mass uncontrolled immigration that Corbyn approves of, we are called racists.

Corbyn and his friends proudly state they are international Socialists and hate nationhood.

When I see him wave the Union Jack and sing our anthem he may have some credibility. Patriot, Levenshulme

THE truth is Jeremy Corbyn is not an extremist. He is a perfectly average, normal Marxist, and so is his deputy John McDonnell. They themselves also say they are international Socialists.

These things are perfectly honourable position to have, but useless in a capitalist system.

Well over 90 per cent do not want this kind of hard line politics, ask any last European desperate to live here.

It can work for a period and then hits the buffers. China is now so strong thanks to capitalism. Name and address received

Police 101 line works for me

I HAVE just read the letter from ‘Concerned Resident’ and I am glad to say they are not writing on my

behalf (‘It’s criminal that police 101 number doesn’t work,’ Viewpoints July 4).

I have rung 101 a few times. They do not ask you what force you want. They know you are ringing from Manchester so put you straight through to GMP.

So I suggest ‘Concerned’ get his facts right before putting pen to paper. Proud Mancunian, Manchester

Some of us like the DUP

MARGARET Clarke (Viewpoints July

7) sounds like one of the bannerwaving mob we see on the telly all too frequently.

She would be surprised how many of us support those patriots in the DUP.

She does the usual student rant in calling those who don’t agree with her perverted view of the world ‘bigots.’ DUP Fan, Levenshulme

Hospital TV is not too loud

QUIET guy of Crumpsall suggests people take in reading materials to hospital whilst waiting for appointments (‘Turn down the volume!’ Viewpoints, July 4).

Why didn’t he? The televisions aren’t loud and some people can’t afford the expense of magazines and newspapers.

He didn’t HAVE to watch Homes Under the Hammer. B Norris, Gorton

Search for an old friend

CAN anyone help me? I am looking for a friend of mine from 1964, whose name is Vincent Scott.

He used to live off Upper Brook Street, I think around July Street/ January Street and not far from the doctors near Darbishire House.

He is a mixed-race man and was also friends with Elijah Cooper, Arthur Gledhill and Stuart Parkin. Peter Cannon, 6 Tideswell Close, Heald Green, SK8 3BP. Mobile: 07493 882908.
