Thousands get on their bikes for city cycle

- By CHRIS SLATER @MENnewsdesk

THOUSANDS of cyclists took over the city centre for a huge traffic-free ride.

A number of major roads were closed for the HSBC Manchester City Ride yesterday, which allowed cyclists to enjoy a safe ride on a specially-marshalled course.

Starting and ending in Albert Square, the 11km route took in some of the city’s most iconic sights as it made its way out to Old Trafford and MediaCity and back again.

Legendary track cyclist and Britain’s joint most successful Olympian, Sir Chris Hoy, and two-time Olympian champion Joanna Rowsell Shand got the event underway before mingling with the thousands of riders of all ages and abilities.

Rowsell Shand said: “With British Cycling being based in Manchester, I came to regard this city as home during my cycling career, and it’s been fantastic to see so many people out on their bikes. Events like this are so important in getting people of all ages out and showing them just how accessible cycling can be.

“Hopefully today has inspired everyone here and thousands more across the city.”

The event was organised by British Cycling in partnership with Manchester council, and was the sixth of 14 HSBC UK City Rides taking place across the country this summer.
