Mela magic draws huge crowd to party

THOUSANDS of people enjoyed the distinctiv­e sights, sounds and smells of Manchester’s Mega Mela festival – the city’s ever-popular celebratio­n of south Asian culture.

The two-day festival came to an end at Platt Fields Park last night, with the crowds thrilled by stalls, dancing and music.

The stage was centre of most attention, with performanc­es from Hunterz, Raghav, Imran Khan, Labh Janjua and DJ H among many others.

South Asian sports were also featured including Kabaddi, Indian wrestling and stone lifting.

There were also fashion shows, arts and crafts stalls, a funfair and street theatre, as well as food stalls.

The event showcased a diverse array of talent from the Indian, Pakistani, Bangladesh­i, Sri Lankan and Nepalese communitie­s in and around the Manchester area.

Visitors also enjoyed free henna painting, rangoli, face painting, dance workshops and a fashion show.

The event has been a staple of the city’s summer since it started in 2003.
