THEY are hiding in resorts where thousands are heading for their summer holidays.
On-the-run criminals and suspects wanted for murder, rape and drug dealing remain at large in Spain, Holland and Malta.
The National Crime Agency has vowed to hunt them down and bring them back to the UK to face justice and want British holidaymakers to help.
And far from enjoying a cushy life in the sunshine, Matt Burton, head of the NCA’s international crime bureau, says that most people who go on the run overseas live with the constant fear of being caught.
“Fugitives are always living life on the edge,” he said.
“Looking over their shoulder in case they’re found and brought to justice. It’s not much of a life and not as much fun as people may think. Sometimes these criminals just break and hand themselves in.
Here are three of Greater Manchester and Cheshire’s most wanted suspects who are believed to be hiding out on the Continent.
Christopher More Jnr
More is wanted in connection with the notorious murder of a man at a remote Cheshire farmhouse in June 2003.
The victim, Brian Waters, was horrifically tortured and left with injuries described by medical experts as similar to those caused by a car crash. He was killed in front of his son and daughter after being beaten, whipped, burned with acid, attacked with an industrial staple gun, trussed up and suspended upside down in a barrel of water at Burnt House Farm in Tabley.
He also suffered internal injuries after being assaulted with an iron bar.
A court was told the farm’s cowshed was ‘turned into a torture chamber’ during the killing which was linked to a dispute over drugs.
Three men were convicted of Mr Waters’ murder.
More and a number of accomplices were alleged to have travelled to the farmhouse, where, after their demands for money were refused, they assaulted the five people in the house, beating Mr Waters so badly that he died at the scene. More, now 38 and from Lymm in Cheshire, who had worked for a surveillance company, is also wanted for the alleged attempted murder of a second man and for the false imprisonment and assault of other victims present during the incident.
He left the United Kingdom in June 2003 and is believed to have flown to Spain. Information suggests that More has links to Spain and Malta. His current location is not known.
More is known to use a number of aliases: Christopher Guest, Chris Guest, Christopher Moores and Christopher Moore.
David John Walley
Walley is believed to be in Holland and is wanted in connection with smuggling class A drugs. Police believe he was linked to several drug deliveries made to an address in Manchester. In January 2013 one of the parcels was intercepted by the authorities and found to contain MDMA and cocaine. It is alleged that Walley arranged the importation of the drugs.
Police have been trying to track him ever since. He was last seen during a routine traffic stop check by Amsterdam police in September 2014 when Walley identified himself as another person and produced a passport that was later found to be false.
Detectives say Walley has a tattoo of the name ‘Natalie’ in blue bordered by a scroll emblem dragon on his right arm, and a tattoo of a Manchester City FC emblem.
Shazad Ghafoor
Ghafoor, a suspected drug trafficker, is believed to be laying low in Holland.
Police say that he admitted a dangerous driving charge following a 20-mile police chase in which his rented 4x4 car overturned near Halifax. Armed officers surrounded the car and around £100,000 cash was recovered.
Ghafoor was charged with fraud, possession of criminal property, dangerous driving and disqualified driving.
He was also charged with possession of cannabis with intent to supply after a vehicle was searched in Withington in November 2013 and cannabis worth £245,000 was found.
In May 2014, Ghafoor pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. He was due to appear in court in February 2015 in relation to the other charges but failed to answer his bail and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Police believe he travelled to the Netherlands.
In addition he was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to supply in relation to a separate seizure of cannabis worth £24,000 that was found at house in Kingsway Avenue, Burnage, in September 2014. He is said to use a string of alias names – Mohammed Shazad, Andul Ghafor, Nadeem Ahmed, and Nadeen Javiad. He is 5ft 11in with a pock mark on his right cheek, a scar on the right of his nose and another on top of his right hand.
