Passenger injured as rocks hurled through tram window

A PASSENGER was injured when yobs hurled rocks through a tram window.

The woman was struck by the stone on a Rochdale via Oldham service as it was travelling between Freehold and Westwood stations.

Vandals were seen hurling objects at three trams at around 10.20am yesterday.

Transport for Greater Manchester was forced to suspend Rochdale services for a short time following the incident.

An ambulance was called and the woman was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. The extent of her injuries are not yet known.

The three trams were sent back to the depot for repairs.

A TfGM spokesman said: “Services on the Oldham via Rochdale line were suspended from 10.20am.

“Three separate trams were damaged by objects hurled at them between Freehold and Westhold stations.

“We understand a passenger was injured and they are currently receiving medical assistance.”

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “We were called just before 10.20am.

“There has been some rocks thrown through the window of a tram and a woman has injured.”

GMP have launched an investigat­ion and are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with further informatio­n to come forward.
