Askey: Pre-season wins mean nothing

-

MACCLESFIELD manager John Askey insists his side will not get carried away with some of their impressive pre-season performances.

The Silkmen have beaten Bury and Crewe in recent weeks as they build up to the new campaign.

But Askey says none of that matters if they don’t perform in their opening National League match against Wrexham this weekend.

“I think if somebody said to us in the summer we were going to do this well in pre-season we’d have snapped their hands off but it means nothing, all we are doing now is concentrating on Wrexham,” he said.

“They’ve all been tough games. I thought against Derby we did really well and we conceded when we changed the team. Bury was a good result and to get a win against a League One club was also very good. Then against Stockport we fell apart when we changed the team, and then the last game versus Crewe was a good result and it could have been more.”

Macclesfield’s last pre-season game of the summer took place on Saturday when they suffered a 2-0 defeat to League One side Blackpool.

Despite the loss, Askey was pleased with what he saw.

“When we changed things, we fell apart a little bit but I know the reason why, but I’ve been pretty pleased,” he said. “We weren’t getting carried away after beating Crewe and we won’t get carried away about losing because again I thought we were in the game.”
