Activist spoke out on school crossing and danger junction

-

DAVID Buckley has been a Conservative activist for more than 20 years and was a councillor representing the Stalybridge South ward for eight years from 2007 until his retirement shortly before the 2015 local elections.

During his time he spoke out on a number of road safety issues, including demanding modifications to a ‘dangerous junction’ and asking for lollipop men and women to remain in place outside a local school.

Speaking after the hearing, crash victim Lee Oliver, 41, who lives with his wife of 12 years and children in Greenfield, Oldham, said: “You’ve got this guy who’s been going round presenting a persona and preaching road safety whilst getting into a car after drinking and putting me and my family at risk. If he is suffering from Parkinson’s, even more reason not to drink and drive.

“We’re just so lucky we saw him coming and were able to stop. It was really frightening. We were sat there convinced he would see us and brake.

“If we’d come round the bend 15 seconds later we would have been travelling at 30mph and it could have been much, much worse.

“Even now me and my wife are not right psychologically and all of us have been affected by it mentally and are nervous in the car.

“Personally I don’t think a fine is enough. You need to make sure he doesn’t do this again.”
