Man in his 70s ‘punched and kicked to ground’ in city centre

A PENSIONER was left with injuries to his face after he was ‘punched and kicked to the ground’ in the city centre.

Police have launched an investigat­ion following the brutal and unprovoked assault on St Mary Street near Kendals.

The victim, who is in his 70s, was punched and kicked to the ground by a man who approached him near Parsonage Gardens.

He then fled in the direction of Southgate, parallel to House of Fraser.

The victim was left with several facial injuries after the attack last Monday at around 9.50am.

A probe has been launched and police are appealing for witnesses.

The offender is described as medium build, in his late 30s and white.

He was wearing blue jeans with a navy blue jumper at the time of the assault. Pc Laura Roberts, from GMP, said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on an innocent man who was going about his daily business and has unfortunat­ely been left with facial injuries.

“We have launched an investigat­ion and I would ask that anybody who thinks they may know something that can assist with our investigat­ion to please contact police.

“I would also ask that anyone who thinks they may recognise the descriptio­n of the offender or know who he is to please get in touch.”
