Mendy accused of ‘cheap shot’ tweet
BENJAMIN Mendy was accused of taking a ‘cheap shot’ at Brighton goalkeeper Mathew Ryan after City’s 2-0 win.
BT Sport pundits Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard criticised the Frenchman for sending a joke tweet about Lewis Dunk’s own goal at the Amex Stadium, which sealed victory for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Mendy, who missed the match through injury tweeted: “Bullet header” after Dunk inadvertently put the ball past his own keeper.
But Gerrard insisted it was disrespectful.
“I don’t like to see that,” said the former England international. “There’s no need for it.
“There’ll be a time during the season when Mendy makes a mistake and he’ll be wide open to it.
“They’ve won the game, there’s a lot of positives as far as City are concerned, for me it’s a cheap shot on a new goalkeeper.”
He added: “Being captain of the team I’d say be careful moving forward because you leave yourself wide open.
“I think it’s disrespectful to a fellow professional and I just think there’s totally no need for it at all.”
Former City midfielder Lampard agreed, adding: “Why don’t you just have a few seconds to double check that that’s the right thing to say?”
Mendy later responded to one Twitter user, Niall McGrath, who also described him of being unprofessional, saying: “Thats called humor U should try it sometimes (+ that might come back & people joke about it, thats ok its all fun).”
