Wigan stun Shakers with second-half show in derby blitz

- FOOTBALL By SHELDAN KEAY

WIGAN ATHLETIC claimed bragging rights against local rivals BURY yesterday after picking up a 4-1 victory at the DW Stadium.

Wigan took the lead through Michael Jacobs, but new Bury signing Alex Bruce levelled things up moments later to make it 1-1 at the break.

The hosts ran away with it in the second half though, as Nick Powell kept up his good form by scoring twice, before Lee Evans grabbed the fourth in stoppage time to help his team earn an emphatic win.

OLDHAM ATHLETIC are still searching for their first point of the season after they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Walsall at the Bescot Stadium.

Oldham made the breakthrough in the first half, as Ryan McLaughlin scored just after the half hour mark.

They carried that lead into the second half, but Joe Edwards grabbed an equaliser for Walsall on 53 minutes.

Latics thought they had a point but they were dealt a cruel blow in the 90th minute when Erhun Oztumer got the winner, much to the anger of manager John Sheridan.

“We threw the game away. In the second half we were not at the races. After seeing that I need five or six players,” he said.

“I’m not somebody who likes to make things public about what I feel but even some of the players in the team aren’t good enough.

“We’ve had a break for 15 minutes. I’m watching totally different players and a performance where it was a great opportunity to get three points.”

ROCHDALE had to settle for a point as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Scunthorpe United at the Crown Oil Arena.

It was goalless at the break, but Rochdale went ahead on 55 minutes through substitute Steven Davies.

They weren’t ahead for long though, as fellow substitute Duane Holmes netted for Scunthorpe just after the hour mark to make sure his team took a share of the spoils.

Rochdale’s Ollie Rathbone said: “It’s hard to take [having gone a goal up to end drawing the game] but they’re a good team – they’re going to create chances. “I thought we defended well, but the one time we didn’t they took their chance – that’s what good teams do. “Hopefully as we get further into the season we’ll look back at it as a point gained.”

In the Championship, BOLTON WANDERERS picked up their first point of the campaign after a 1-1 draw at Millwall. George Saville put the Lions in front, but a good free-kick from Filipe Morais on 62 minutes earned a point.
