THERE were dramatic scenes as dozens of bikers roared through the streets to pay tribute to a teenager as he was laid to rest.

Scores of friends and family gathered in Salford for Karl Harrison’s funeral as motorbikes were spotted in the city – and in neighbouring Manchester.

Dozens of bikers followed the procession down Bury New Road as a mark of respect to the 19-year-old motorcycle fanatic.

A service, attended by hundreds, took place at Agecroft Cemetery on Monday afternoon.

Mr Harrison’s coffin was decorated with bikes and roses.

Floral tributes in the shape of motorcycles and helmets were also laid by his grave.

Off-road bikes and quad bikes were among those later seen on Deansgate, Portland Street and Market Street in Manchester city centre.

Police said they were made aware of the procession before riders took to the streets.

Mr Harrison, from Swinton, died on June 20.

Following his death, his family thanked well-wishers for their support. A statement, released through GMP, read: “We would like to give thanks for all the support from our family, friends and members of the community who have expressed their sympathy and shock having learnt of Karl’s death.

“It’s impossible to convey the sadness and loss that we all feel. Karl was no angel, but he was our son and his death has left a hole in our hearts.

“No parent should ever have to lay their child to rest and we know this hurt will never leave us.”

Chief Insp Suzanne Downey of GMP’s Salford Borough said: “We were made aware that there would be a large number of motorbikers attending the funeral of Karl Harrison.

“Around 80 motorbikes followed the funeral procession down Bury New Road as a mark of respect to Karl, at which point a number of members of the public have made reports of anti-social behaviour taking place.

“I would like to offer our continued condolences to Karl’s family.”

Two men have been charged with murder.
