CITY goalkeeper Ederson has expressed his delight at being called up to the Brazil senior squad for the first time.

The 23-year-old has been capped at under-23 level, but on Friday heard he had been handed a place in the main squad, alongside City team-mates Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus.

And Ederson, who was picked by Pep Guardiola ahead of Claudio Bravo for the Blues’ opening game of the season, says the competition provided by the Chile star is helping him progress.

“I am very happy to have been called up by the national team,” he said after being included in the squad for World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Colombia in a fortnight.

“It’s another achievement in my career and I’ve worked very hard for this moment.

“I believe Brazil has good options for the goalkeeper position and now I will go, enjoy and give my best when the squad meets up.”

Ederson is in competition with Roma keeper Alisson Becker and another uncapped player, Cassio of Corinthians.

And he told City’s official website the challenge offered by Bravo is helping him.

“Does it put me under extra pressure? No, not at all,” he said.

“I believe that is in fact very positive for Manchester City, to have two great goalkeepers at their disposal.

“City has a lot to win and whoever Pep decides to play, will be able to manage the job well.”
