‘It was bonkers!’ corrie star’s romantic surprise

-

CORONATION Street favourite Sam Aston has revealed how getting engaged was the ‘best day of his life’.

Sam, who plays the soap’s Chesney Brown, proposed to his girlfriend Briony Gardner with a romantic surprise in June.

He went down on bended knee in front of more than 250 people at the annual charity golf dinner that he hosts with co-stars Alan Halsall and Andy Whyment at the Worsley Park Marriott Hotel in Salford.

Talking for the first time about the engagement in this week’s OK! Magazine, Sam says: “We’re quite private people so I wanted to do something she wouldn’t expect from me.”

While many people wouldn’t have had the nerve to pop the question so publicly, Sam had no doubts about Briony’s answer. “I was never going to say no!” the 22-year-old brideto-be told the magazine. Sam, 24, said: “Getting engaged was the best day of our lives, it was bonkers.”

Briony added: “I felt like I was floating – I still feel that way. I’ve wanted to get engaged since we got together, so every birthday, Christmas or anniversary, I’ve been thinking, is he going to propose?’” The young couple say they hope to wed in 2019 and are already busy planning all the details.

On getting married at what may seem to some a relatively young age, Sam says: “I’ve always felt old before my time – I’ve been working since I was about five! We’ve also been together for a long time so it just feels right and I don’t feel like I want to wait.”

Briony said: “We’ve found the person we want to marry. Sam’s parents have just celebrated 48 years of marriage and mine have been married for 34 years, so I want to get in as many years as we can!”
