Boss wants to see more from Martial

-

JOSE Mourinho has urged Anthony Martial to offer him more after scoring twice in as many games for United.

Martial emerged off the bench against West Ham and Swansea to seal United’s opening Premier League victories and there is a clamour among some supporters for him to replace Marcus Rashford on the left flank.

Mourinho felt Martial’s focus was compromised at the start of last season amid the France international’s domestic issues and he struggled to establish himself as a first-teamer.

The 21-year-old could remain on the bench for the visit of Leicester to Old Trafford today but Mourinho believes Martial, like Henrikh Mkhitaryan, understands him ‘better’.

“I think again better,” Mourinho said. “I think I’m still - and that I cannot change - I think when you have some talents you cannot waste, I think when you are blessed with some talent, you have to fulfil that talent, you have to explore that talent, you cannot be happy with just glimpses of talent, and that I’m not going to change.

“I want more and more and more from him because he has all the qualities for that. He understands me better too and the personal relation is good and I don’t think it’s fundamental in a player-manager relation, but it’s an added good thing to have a good relation. So again, Anthony I hope he is going to be better this season than last season.”

Mourinho revealed former United forward Wayne Rooney telephoned him to inform him of his international retirement. “He told me the night before,” Mourinho added. “I understand his reasons.”
