Nurses who helped mum inspire Olivia

-

A WIGAN student who was inspired to pursue a career in nursing following her mum’s cancer battle is one step closer to achieving her dream.

Olivia Hanley, of Winstanley College, aced her A levels and will be going to the University of Liverpool to study adult nursing.

Olivia’s motivation to become an adult nurse came from her mum’s battle with cancer and the positive impact that nurses had on her family.

The 18-year-old secured B,B,C and an A in her extended nursing project.

Olivia said: “I wanted to study adult nursing because my mum was suffering from cancer and we were in close contact with nurses and health professionals and I loved the work that they did and how they helped my mum and whole family and I also wanted to make this impact.

“I have done a lot of work experience over the last few years. I volunteered at Wigan and Leigh Hospice for over a year on the inpatient unit. I loved meeting and chatting with patients and helping them in any way I could. I loved my time here and loved working so closely alongside patients and nurses.

“The scrapping of the bursary did not affect my choice as nursing has always been something which I have always wanted to do and I am so passionate about.”

Olivia’s friends, Sophie Yorke and Ellie Jackson, also got the results they needed to go on to degrees in children’s nursing.

Sophie said: ‘I think the scrapping of the bursary is a bad idea when the NHS is so stretched.

“However, I have always wanted to be a nurse so it didn’t put me off.’
