Kelly setting his sights on second crack at claiming world crown

WYTHENSHAWE’S Jimmy Kelly says getting a taste of a world title fight has made him more determined than ever to reach that level again.

Kelly returns to action on September 23 when he faces Stiliyan Kostov at the Manchester Arena for the vacant WBO Intercontinental SuperWelterweight championship.

It takes place on the same bill as Hughie Fury’s WBO heavyweight title challenge against Joseph Parker.

Kelly has known Fury for a number of years as the duo were from the same amateur boxing club, and the 24-year-old says he hopes to soon be challenging for world titles again just like Fury.

“Winning the title will get me into a great position in the WBO rankings and give me a clearer path towards my second shot at the world title which I believe that I’m ready for again,” he said.

“I’m still only 24 and I’ve learnt plenty since the loss to Liam Smith. It’s been hard work getting myself back up to this position, but I’ve gone six fights unbeaten since and I’m hungrier than ever to get back into world title contention.

“The event in Manchester is one of the biggest fight nights in British boxing this year and I’m thrilled to be in a title fight as chief support to Hughie’s challenge for the WBO world title.

“We’re both Manchester lads and trained in the same club as amateurs so I aim to make it a double on the night with him winning the world title and me capturing my belt.”
